From Stage Lights to Studio Lights: The Seamless Transition from Rock Musician to Photographer

Hey, all! As someone who spent some exhilarating years touring with the iconic 80’s rock band Winger and Bad Company’s Brian Howe, playing guitar for crowds that thrived on the raw energy of rock music, my journey has taken a somewhat transformative turn into the world of photography. Today, I want to share how my skills as a musician have seamlessly transitioned into a wonderful, fulfilling, and successful career in photography while allowing me to continue my passion for creativity in a new form.

Harmonizing Music and Photography

In the world of creative arts, few fields share as profound a connection as music and photography (you wouldn’t believe how many photographers are musicians and vice-versa). Both require a keen sense of composition, an intuitive grasp of timing, and the ability to tell a decent story. As a guitarist, I mastered (mastered may be a little strong) the art of engaging audiences with melodic narratives and dynamic rhythms. Transitioning to photography, these skills proved invaluable as I learned to capture visual stories that resonate emotionally and aesthetically with viewers.

This sounds crazy, but when a mom starts crying when she sees her daughter’s photos, I know I’ve made an emotional connection. Photography, much like music, is about expression and connection. The Canon camera, like a guitar, is my instrument of choice, capturing light and shadows much as I once captured a sound. This synergy makes both arts complementary, with each performance—whether on stage or in the studio—relying on a deep understanding of mood, atmosphere, and audience.

Maintaining the Rhythm of Creativity

Creativity thrives on rhythm and flow, and the transition from music to photography has allowed me to maintain this essential idea in my daily work. In rock music, composing a song involves a deep dive into the emotional and technical aspects of the art. Similarly, planning a photography session involves understanding the subject, the light, and the desired outcome to create compelling imagery.

Each photo shoot is like a live performance, where preparation meets opportunity. The spontaneity I embraced on stage is just as crucial in photography, where moments unfold and are captured in real-time. The ability to adapt quickly and creatively to changing scenarios on stage has been instrumental in managing dynamic environments during photo sessions. It really is surreal how much the two worlds have in common.

Innovating with Every Shot

The 1980s rock scene was characterized by its innovative use of technology and style, hairspray and makeup, breaking traditional molds and setting new musical trends. In photography, I try to channel this same spirit of innovation, constantly experimenting with new techniques, tools, and perspectives to push the boundaries of what I can achieve visually. I’m still learning, but each session is a step in the right direction.

From using advanced editing software to experimenting with unconventional lighting techniques, the photographic process is a playground for creative expression. Each project is an opportunity to explore new themes, styles, and moods.

Precision and Performance

Precision in music—hitting the right note at the right time—is mirrored in photography by the imperative to capture the decisive moment. Just as a well-timed guitar solo can elevate a song, a perfectly captured photograph can transcend ordinary artistry, becoming something truly memorable. I can still remember hundreds of concerts that I attended when I was younger, vividly!

The technical skills I honed while tuning guitars and synchronizing with bandmates are now applied to adjusting camera settings and aligning compositions. The focus and detail required in setting up a perfect shot are not unlike preparing for a key performance at a sold-out concert.

Connecting With a New Audience

As a musician, I connected with audiences through sound. Now, as a photographer, I connect through images. This transition has allowed me to engage with a different kind of audience—a more intimate one, where the feedback is not applause, but the emotional impact seen in a client’s eyes when they view my work.

In both careers, understanding and anticipating the audience's (or client's) desires are key to delivering successful outcomes. As a Memphis photographer, connecting with the local community and understanding its unique vibe and spirit help in creating images that resonate and tell the stories that matter most to them.
