Tips for Choosing the PERFECT Outfits for Family Portraits

Deciding what family photo outfits to wear can be just as challenging as finding the perfect location. These are photos you will frame and hang on your walls for many years. It can seem like a daunting task but it doesn’t have to be! Follow these easy tips to help style your family!

Coordinate colors but NOT matching!

Gone are the days of everyone wearing all white t-shirts and jeans!  Let every family member show their personality but at the same time use coordinating colors. If you are a mom reading this, pick YOUR outfit first.  We all know its the hardest getting ourselves dressed! Pick your color and build your family’s wardrobe from there! You want a good mix between everyone and don't forget to use patterns, prints, layers, florals and plaids.

Add textures, layers and accessories!

It is okay, and even very desirable to mix and match textures, cuts, and styles of outfits in your family photos. Don’t be afraid to mix sweaters, blouses, shirts and jackets or even hats/head pieces in order to achieve some diversity.

Wear clothes that fit.

When it comes to finding the perfect family portrait outfit, you want your kids clothes to fit properly.  No baggy clothes and long shirt sleeves that cover your kids hands this will just look sloppy. This even goes for the moms and dads too.  Don't hide behind a too big jacket to hide hips and waists.  Instead try going down a size in a jacket to create a tailored look.

Be comfortable!

You want your clothes to be comfortable to run and play and laugh in because we will be having lots of fun during your family session.  You don't want to wear something that makes you feel self conscious but instead wear something that is you and makes you feel your best.

Dress babies and small kids at arrival!

We all know how unpredictable kids can be, especially babies! If possible, dress them once you arrive to the location of your session! Also, be sure to have non-sticky and messy snacks to have on hand for those bribes!

Keep location in mind.

Having your photos taken at the beach?  Sundresses, khakis and bare feet would be an ideal choice. Are you looking for a bright spot, perhaps downtown? Then heels and dressier night clothes are a good option. Really think about your choice of location to help you choose the perfect family outfits.

Matching shirts can be fun!

New addition to the family? Special announcement? Check with your photographer to see if you can do a quick wardrobe change to share special news or show off the outgoing side of your family!

What to leave in the car!

  • purses

  • apple watches

  • hair ties

  • anything in your pockets

  • gum

Hopefully you found some helpful ideas to ease the stress of planning your family’s photo session! Outfits are important but its the SMILES that you will cherish forever!
